How many days in Phuket?
Editorial planning suggestions, not guarantees — the right length depends on your pace and priorities.
Enough for a quick beach stay, one major excursion, and a bit of Old Town or a viewpoint.
A good first-trip balance — one beach base, an island trip, and time to actually relax.
A more relaxed pace, with room for multiple areas or more than one tour.
Slower days, multiple beaches, and time for the surrounding islands too.
When to come
- Dec–Mar generally gives the most reliable beach weather.
- Green season can still be a good trip — rain is usually short showers, not all-day.
- Sea conditions matter as much as sunshine for island trips.
Arrival & getting around
- Airport transfer options range from a pre-booked private car to Taxi, Smart Bus or Grab/Bolt — it depends on your hotel, luggage and arrival time.
- Apps worth installing before you land: Grab and Bolt for rides, Google Maps or Apple Maps for getting around — you do not need a scooter to cover most trips.
- Phuket is more spread out than it looks — budget real travel time between areas, not straight-line map distance.
- Cash and cards: ATMs are widely available, though foreign cards may be charged a withdrawal fee. Cash still helps at markets and small vendors; cards work almost everywhere else. A Thailand eSIM gets you online as soon as you land.
What to do & what to book
- Choose one island trip — Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and Similan (when open) are each genuinely different days out, not the same trip with a different name.
- Book that island trip and any popular tour ahead of time; beaches, markets and Old Town can wait until you land.
- Mix beach days with Phuket Old Town, a market or a viewpoint for a change of pace.
Common first-timer mistakes
- Choosing a hotel by straight-line map distance — Kata's Club Med, for example, means some "beachfront" hotels need a short walk around it to reach the sand.
- Underestimating travel time between areas — traffic matters more than the distance looks.
- Trying to see the whole island in two days — Phuket is bigger and more spread out than it looks.
- Assuming every island trip is the same experience — Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and Similan are genuinely different.
- Assuming rainy season means constant rain — it's usually short showers with plenty of sun between them.
- Exchanging money at the airport — rates there are typically worse than in town. Bring some cash with you and change the rest once you're settled.
